Swirl Fine Art & Design

Swirl Fine Art and Design carries an eclectic mix original paintings and sculpture.  The gallery represents eight regional and local artists with one common thread - their passion for art illuminates through in their work. “I represent artists that I truly love.”

Tracy Proctor: Drawing inspiration from nature and the mountainous region where I live, I taught myself how to paint mainly through trial, error and experimentation.  Once an engaging composition of texture is emerges; I focus on the drama of light by applying layers of dynamic color.  Ten years of experience in the Interior Design industry influenced my love for color and composition and my formal education in business enhanced my ability to market myself and my artists.

Rachelle Kearl: Rachelle is a self taught artist born and raised in Calgary.  She keeps herself busy raising four children, but always makes a bit of time to paint. Hidden treasures lie deep within the simpler things in life; I enjoy using my own interpretation to capture these “treasures” onto canvas. Basing a painting on simplicity then allowing it to grow into something more is my play land.

Chester Lees: Chester is a Calgary based painter, performance artist, and arts facilitator. Chester’s character roles include Emily Carr and Marilyn Monroe for exhibitions at the Glenbow Museum. Her canvas is set on the stage of Alberta Prairies, depicting ambiguous locales and moments paused between sunny and stormy.

Lindsey Love: Lindsey grew up as the quiet first born of a farming family in Bassano, Alberta. The young artist reveals a fresh style that impacts viewers by its attachment to evoke the ambiguous emotional state that real experiences conjure. There is an air of serenity about her work – an added depth and quiet sense of alienation.  The viewer almost becomes a part of the painting.

Donna MacDonald: Donna is an award winning artist who lives in Calgary where she works full time as an artist and art instructor.  She uses loose brushstrokes to simplify and suggest details using a wet into wet technique. "Painting has become a passion and a wonderful necessity in my life.  Since becoming a full time artist, I have unexpectedly discovered that painting provides me relief from almost daily migraines which I've had for over thirty years. I truly believe that I am doing what I was always meant to do and feel very blessed!"

Knicki Markolf: I believe that the stones are our oldest story keepers. She lets the stone aid her in unraveling its mystery, teaching her its story, bringing that mystery forward.

Tammy Olsson:
The snapshots people put in boxes and dismiss. I turn these images into paintings of unreal proportions, giving them an abstract quality and drawing attention to the ambiguity and subtleties that go unnoticed when they remain a photograph. Incorporating found domestic objects onto or into the canvas adds another plane to interact with the image and points out the physicality of the painting itself.” My work comes out of a desire to create invitations to contemplation and to counter hastiness. It is through contemplation that one becomes truly aware and open to life: to the beauty and transcendences in the ordinary.

Kenneth Perry: Stones carry the magic of life. Stones describe and shape the human evolution through sculpture. Change, the action of sculpture on stone is carried in the language of the stone. The outcome of the sculpture is how one understands the language.

Chris Riley: My work comes from exploring my materials fully and pushing and challenging myself to build layers upon layers of textures and ‘lost and found’ lines and colors. I love the little surprises that reveal themselves differently each time you look at a painting. I'm naturally and intensely curious so I'm constantly trying new methods and applying them with life experiences, which starts the story and the journey. I love when the viewer has a similar or fresh experience with my work and I hope it continues long after it leaves the studio.

Sheila Schaetzle: In the beauty of Nature lies the spirit of Hope. Pulled by the beauty of Nature, I walk the pathways, I hear the river, and watch the trees. They are my strength and protection. I feel the wind and breathe the air. I breathe deep and look to the skies. There is always something to see; even the shadows hold colors that echo the richness of the earth. Come outside and see the beauty.

Susan Thorpe: Susan is a Calgary based ceramic and pottery artist. Susan’s work has both hand built and wheel thrown components, are bisqued in a kiln, and hand painted. Her distinctive tableware is food & heat safe functional wares hand built using Plainsman clay from Alberta and only non-toxic and lead free materials.

Anne Watson: “Enthralled by the innate beauty of the natural world, I see patterns, compositions and exquisiteness everywhere I look. Everything is a potentially divine moment to be captured and reinterpreted on canvas. I draw inspiration from many places that I’ve visited around the world, but lately it is the diverse character and subtle color pallets of Alberta that is particularly captivating to me, as I feel a deep connection to this land.

Sharon Lynn Williams: Sharon lives, paints and teaches in Calgary, and is a signature member of the Alberta Society of Artists, Federation of Canadian Artists and International Plein Air Painters.  Sharon began painting oils 'en plein air' (in the fresh air) as she longed to escape the confines of her studio and connect once again with nature. In her plein air work she tries to capture what interests her the most in a scene and put it into an compelling design; focusing on simplifying shapes and filling them with interesting colour. Sharon’s desire is that her paintings will transport the viewer into my pictorial world to connect with the majesty of Nature as she has done.
