ion:\nTracy&rsquo\;s Home Studio in Glenbrook \n\nThis\nintensive works
hop is designed to cover the basic principles of encaustic\ntechniques.
Once an artist understands the fundamentals of heating and\nmanipulating
surfaces\, there are limitless possibilities to the versatility of\nenc
 austic painting.\n \nTopics\nCovered: \nStudio\nSafety\nProperties\nof p
igments and wax mediums \nMaking\nyour own clear medium\n\n\nColouring\n
 techniques \nBasic\nrequirements of supports\n\nTexturing\ntechniques in
 cluding carving and collage\n \n \nWhat\nis Encaustic Art? \nThe\nword e
ncaustic comes from the Greek word\, enkaustikos\,\nmeaning "to heat" or
"to burn". Beeswax melted with resin\nand pigment forms the paint\, and
it is applied hot. Each layer of wax must be\nfused with heat to the la
yer beneath it. The method of painting with wax came\nfrom ancient Greec
e where shipbuilders painted the hulls of their ships to\nseal\, protect
and decorate the surfaces. This led artists to use encaustic for\neasel
painting and decoration of clay and marble sculptures\, and on to the\n
ancient Fayum portraits of Egyptian mummy casings. The medium was lost i
n\nobscurity from the seventh century until the twentieth century where
artists\nsuch as Diego Rivera\, Arthur Dove\, Karl Zerbe and finally Jas
per Johns began to\nrevive it. More and more contemporary painters and s
culptors are experimenting\nwith encaustic in a range of styles and tech
niques due to increasingly\navailable resources and materials. The possi
bilities for luminous color\,\nvariety of texture\, and depth are quite
limitless.\n \nCaring\nfor an encaustic painting is simple. Like any fin
e art\, encaustics should be\nkept out of direct sunlight. An\nencausti
c painting will not melt until the temperature reaches 150 degrees\, but
\nthey should not be left in a hot vehicle or hung above a wood burning\
nfireplace. To clean the surface\, dust gently with a soft cloth and han
dle with\ncare. The unvarnished surface is very stable and will continue
  to cure and\nharden over time.
