Interview with an artist: Claire Waters
What kind of artwork do you make? I’m an acrylic painter. My paintings are abstracted nature scenes, using color and line to create a unique perspective.
Where did you learn to paint? I’ve learned general styles through classes at the Alberta College of Art & Design, even though my degree focused on Media Arts. Most of my learning has come from experimentation with mediums and textures of paint.
What path led you to the work you do now? Practice! Working through many paintings, I discover something new every time. I don’t think there was any ‘revelation’ that has led me to being an artist, it’s just the natural process of learning.
What has been the biggest influence in your work? Nature has been the biggest influence, as I always seek new shapes and colors to incorporate into my paintings. Though, nature is perfect, and my paintings are only a representation of the emotion evoked while contemplating that scene.
Who is your favorite artist? William Turner, I love his big sky paintings with colorful clouds.
How long have you been at Art Central? I’ve been in the Art Loop for two months.
What do you like the most about working at Art Central? Having the space to set aside for painting! And hearing feedback occasionally from passersby is awesome.
Besides creating art, what is your favorite thing to do? Travel.
Besides Art Central, what is your favorite place in Calgary? Hana Sushi on 4th st… Yum!
What is your favorite book? The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant.
If you were a celebrity, who would you be? People say I look like Katherine Heigl from Grey’s Anatomy. She’s cool!
You can find Claire Waters at Studio H2O on the lower level in the Art Loop
