ArtsASTRAY: 2012 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

Making this World Junior Tournament one that will not soon be forgotten, ArtsASTRAY has been selected to create a Legacy Painting Collection documenting the 2012 WJH Championship Tournament. This collection will be composed of signicant 19-piece mural-sized paintings, 18 of them to be created on-site during the tournament, and will depict the events of the World Junior Hockey Tournament as it unfolds.

These paintings will provide the viewer with an empowered visual experience that will portray the athletes, fans, possibly ocials and coaches of the WJH tournament in the host cities of both Edmonton and Calgary. The 19 paintings will serve as a visual diary; documenting the visual highlights of the tournament. The images will be selected in their ability to address the intangible elements that transcend the game of hockey; the strength and power of the athletes, the love of the game, and the international aspect of the WJH tournament.

Created by a team of six selected Alberta artists (all members of artsASTRAY), the exhibition will provide a lasting reminder of the event, will promote the love of the game for Canadians, and will acknowledge the signicant role hockey plays in our collective Canadian culture.

ArtASTRAY will have 3 of these painting on desplay at Art Central for Januarys First Thursday.

The New Gallery (TNG) - Calgary's original artist-run centre: "What We Take With Us"  by Valerie LeBlanc & Daniel Dugas (Moncton, NB). Opening Reccption Thursday January 5, from 5 to 9pm, show runs through Saturday February 4, 2012

What We Take with Us is a two-channel video installation. Each artist independently created a program of short videos that are then shown projected side by side; as the running time of each program differs, the juxtaposition of visuals changes constantly as the loops progress. The project began as an exploration of the experience of travel and displacement, by examining the concept of home and what that means to various individuals. It was originally developed during a research residency at the Sydney College for the Arts in Sydney, Australia in September/October 2009. The research began with the artists’ own personal explorations and interviews with others, as they looked for indications of what it is like to live in a place and to call it home - and also at the shifts evoked by the experience of physically repositioning oneself in the world.

AXIS Contemporary Art:  Featuring New Axis Artist Stev'nn Hall, mixed-media.

Stev’nn Hall’s work represents a collision between two worlds – where photography meets painting and earth meets sky. Photography, Oil paint, ink, wax, varnish and vinyl latex all conspire to create a common ground where two disciplines coalesce. Both painting and photography, separately and together, exist in one moment to create a balance and union of elements – and its in this moment that we’re are offered a glimpse of what might lie at that unattainable and metaphysical telemetry.

In Horizon, Stev’nn invites us to look past our foreground to an infinite point beyond – an unreachable vanishing point that divides above from below,  offers untold possibility, and grants us the perspective to chart our future bearing.
